Air Suspension Mercedes Sprinter 4x4 camper

Air suspension for Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 4x4 camper vans

Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 4x4 vehicles are often converted into camper vans, overland vehicles, and Class B RVs built for travel beyond the beaten path. These conversions, together with added equipment and off-road accessories, can significantly increase vehicle weight.

These vehicles also operate in a wide range of conditions. They cover long highway miles, gravel roads, forest service roads, muddy trails, and rough off-road terrain. Payload often changes from trip to trip, which adds even more demands.

This combination puts extra pressure on the vehicle, especially on the suspension system. The standard suspension on a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter does not always match this type of use and load. Heavy camper builds, shifting weight distribution, and rough surfaces can reduce stability, ride comfort, and vehicle control.

An air suspension system for Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 4x4 camper vans helps improve stability, maintain a consistent ride height, and increase control on the highway and off-road.

The benefits of air suspension for a Sprinter 4x4 camper van

Mercedes Sprinter 4x4 Camper California

A Mercedes Sprinter 4x4 camper van needs to perform reliably in changing conditions. Think of long highway trips, washboard roads, gravel tracks, muddy trails, and remote backcountry routes. Add camper equipment, gear, and varying payloads, and the demands on comfort, stability, and control increase even further.

A properly matched air suspension system helps improve ride quality, support a consistent ride height, and strengthen overall driving performance.

In the market for Sprinter 4x4 camper vans and Class B RVs, air suspension still does not always get the attention it deserves, even though it can make a clear difference in daily use and during longer overland trips.

Key benefits at a glance

  • improved stability
  • consistent ride height
  • reduced body roll
  • better load distribution across the axles
  • more comfort and control on-road and off-road

Depending on the system, adjustable ride height may also be available. This helps match the vehicle more closely to different driving conditions and types of use.

Is your Sprinter 4x4 camper van overloaded? Consider uprating the vehicle

Uprate your Mercedes Sprinter 4Matic

Camper van conversions, added accessories, and travel equipment can quickly push a vehicle toward its maximum permitted weight. This also applies to the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 4x4.

In practice, heavy payloads often cause the rear of the vehicle to sag, affect weight distribution, and reduce stability. These effects often become even more noticeable on gravel roads, rough tracks, and off-road terrain.

It is possible to uprate the Sprinter 4x4 and increase the permitted gross vehicle weight. This requires a technical modification to the suspension system, for example with VB-FullAir.

An air suspension system supports this process and at the same time helps improve stability and maintain a consistent ride height, even under heavier loads.

A higher permitted gross vehicle weight also increases payload capacity. That allows you to carry more, which can be a real advantage on longer off-grid, off-road, and overland trips.

Contact a VB-Partner to discuss the options for your vehicle.

Please note: increasing the permitted gross vehicle weight may affect driver licensing requirements.

  • 3. My off-road motorhome is too heavy. Can I uprate my motorhome?

Yes, in most cases this is possible. Due to conversions and additional equipment, off-road motorhomes are often subject to increased loads. If the vehicle exceeds the maximum gross vehicle weight (GVW), this affects safety and it no longer complies with legal requirements. It is possible to uprate the maximum gross vehicle weight (GVW), but this requires a modification to the suspension system, such as VB-FullAir.

Installing one of our (air) suspension systems does not automatically uprate the vehicle. However, it will be equipped with the correct system and the necessary documentation to make uprating possible. Please contact a VB-Partner to discuss the available options.

Please note: if the legally permitted weight is increased, a different driving licence may be required.

  • 4. Why choose air suspension for an off-road motorhome?

Off-road motorhomes are often heavier and subject to varying loads due to additional water tanks, batteries and other camping equipment. They also regularly travel on unpaved terrain. Air suspension supports the chassis under these increased and variable loads, maintains a constant ride height and improves stability, comfort and driving characteristics.
